The origins of the Maneki-neko can be traced back to Japan's Edo period (1603-1868). Legends abound about how this charming cat figure came to be. One popular story tells of a wealthy feudal lord who, during a fierce storm, sought shelter under a tree near a temple. There, he noticed a cat that appeared to be beckoning him towards the temple. Intrigued and seeking refuge, he followed the cat. Just as he moved, lightning struck the tree where he had been standing, potentially saving his life. In gratitude, the lord became a benefactor to the temple, and the cat, known thereafter as the Maneki-neko, became a symbol of good fortune and protection.
Another tale speaks of an old woman who couldn't feed her cat anymore. The cat, seemingly understanding its fate, left the house. It returned later with a coin in its mouth, which the woman used to start a business. Her shop prospered, attributing her success to the cat's luck-bringing abilities.
